Flying and Soaring Eagle
There was a great Indian chief named Flying Eagle, who was so named because everyone believed that he would be a great hunter. With the passing of many years, he became as great as everyone thought he would be. Fittingly, he would go up into the mountains, jump from above onto his prey, and kill it by tearing it apart with his hands like talons.
When Flying Eagle’s first son was born, the people in the village waited anxiously to hear the name of the boy. Flying Eagle said, “His name will be Soaring Eagle because he will also fly down upon his prey and become a great hunter.” The people of the village cheered, “Our people will never grow hungry, we will have two great hunters as our chiefs.”
When Soaring Eagle was old enough, his father took him on his first hunting adventure. As they climbed the mountain, Soaring Eagle said,“Father how shall we kill the prey when we do not have weapons?”
“We are eagles, my son, just like the birds that fly high in the sky.”
“But father.....”
“Shhh. There’s a deer. Watch my son.”
The father got into a position above the deer and then flew ten feet down to his prey and killed it.
“Wow, father you truly are a flying eagle.”
“Yes my son. You will also be a soaring eagle.”
“No, father, I’m afraid. It’s too high and I might get hurt. Besides my hands are not strong enough.”
“I will show you. Then you’ll have confidence.”
It just happened that a rabbit came by at that moment. They moved into position but Soaring Eagle was afraid and his body trembled. When Flying Eagle thought that the moment was right he grabbed Soaring Eagle and they both pounced upon the animal.
“Why did you do that father?”
“Sometimes we need a little help with our confidence. Were you afraid when We jumped?”
“I didn’t have time to be scared.”
“Good, that’s the secret, my son.”
From that point on Soaring Eagle became a fearless hunter and was honored like his father.
