Before we discuss the philosophy and goals of this belt level, take a moment to congratulate yourself. At this level, we at Master Lee's TaeKwonDo Academy take a lot of pride in you and your accomplishments in the art thus far. In today's world, with the pressures and time demands that rest on most of our shoulders, it is a tribute to your character and loyalty that you have progressed this far. As a Brown Belt student, you are now in to the more advanced classes. You can make it to your Black Belt. Ours is a demanding school and many can't make it. Because you have made it this far, we know that you have what it takes to make it all the way to your Black Belt. It is your goal to be a Black Belt and you are on your way.

Loyalty is the thrust, the learning focus of the Brown Belt. Have you noticed that every time that you come to the Do-Jang for class the first thing that you do is bow to the flags?

America is a country with opportunity like none other in the world. We at Master Lee's Tae

Kwon Do Academy insist on loyalty to your country. Korean Martial Arts historically exist

as a result of loyalty.

The concept of loyalty is absolutely central to the practice of Tae Kwon Do. The basic root of all Korean Martial Arts is an old Korean belief labeled, "Hongik Inkan."

The Hongik lnkan put the interest of the nation, tribe, and family ahead of his own. This philosophy requires that the Hongik lnkan observe loyalty to their family. It is a son's or daughter's duty to help their parents to have a comfortable life. The source of this loyalty does not come because you are told to be, but comes from within. It is the Tae Kwon Do practitioner's natural inclination to be loyal to their family, their classmates, their country, and finally to themselves. You will not advance to the next belt level, or in life in general, without a profound sense of loyalty to those who have helped shape you into what you are today, and what you are becoming.

You should take an inventory of what you have gained from studying the art thus far--- the benefits both physical and mental cannot be obtained through money or power and these benefits can never be taken away from you. Your loyalty to your school, your Grand Master and Instructors, and your fellow students is another step taken on your path to a Black Belt. Pat yourself on the back, after you have thanked everyone else responsible, for having come so far!

Exam Questions For Brown Belt (3rd KUP)

1. Q: How do we say "About Face!" (or turn around)?

A: Dwi Rho Dol-Ah

2. Q: Why do we practice Promise and Step Sparring?

A: To develop precision, control of distance, and corporation.

3. Q: Why do we control in Free Sparring?

A: To improve precision of the skills and sense of control that may help to establish positive character. In Free Sparring, one is likely to lose temper or sense of control easily

because of our emotional involvement If one is not in control, the techniques can not be

properly executed It is also to learn to care for others by avoiding a violent attitude.

Also importantly, the more control one has in his/her kicks, the better balance and technique one will achieve.

4. Q: Why is meditation necessary?

A: Meditation is necessary for gathering one's spiritual power and development of mental discipline through which we develop a strong spirit This spirit is a non-quitting spirit Meditation may aid in relieving tension or stress and help one achieve deeper insight, greater awareness and a feeling of calmness and relaxation. Through meditation we may learn to control our mind and body as one wholesome spirit so even in highly stressful situations, with the mind cleared of emotion and unnecessary distraction,

self-control is maintained and the proper action can be taken. We also do meditation for the purpose of concentration practice in internalizing important truths and moral standard
