Lee's Tae Kwon Do Academy, which formally begun in 1975 in West Palm Beach began in actuality when Grand Master Kwan Sung Lee began his study of this Korean art of self-defense over 50 years ago. He started teaching Tae Kwon Do in Oh San U.S. Air Force Base in Korea. Mostly he was dedicated to U.S. Arm Force personnel and their families. He also gave lots of effort to his town's development, producing many martial artists over the years.

Grand Master Lee has a ninth degree Black Belt in TaeKwonDo; he is the International

Martial-Arts Federation President.

Grand Master Lee became instructor of his own family also, his oldest son Grand Master Chu Young Lee, 7th degree Black belt on WTF and 8th degree Black Belt on IMF, and his two other sons Master Instructor Sang Young Lee and Chang Young Lee.

Master Chu Young Lee has been training TaeKwonDo since 1964, and had become Jr. National Champion 1969-1972. He was an assistant instructor to Grand Master Kwan Sung Lee at Lee's TaeKwonDo Academy in Louisville, Kentucky (1977-1984) and became U.S Open Tae Kwon Do and Karate -KungFu Champion 1978, 1979. Also, he was TaeKwonDo Instructor at University of Louisville (1980-1982). From 1982 to 1984 he served as the TaeKwonDo Trainer and Instructor at Fort Knox, U.S Army.

In 1984 he reopened Lee's TaeKwonDo Academy in Palm Beach County, where in 1994 he and his students held a fund raiser for the children of the Florida Easter Seal Society. We raised money for student scholarships, Connors Nursery, and again the Easter Seals with a performance at the Kravis Center of West Palm Beach (Oct. 1995). Shortly after, we held a kick-a-thon in the school to sponsor the Leukemia Society (May 1996). We are continuing to carry out our sponsorship programs throughout the year to help the community, and hope to do so for many years to come. We are not only dedicated to the study of Martial Arts but we are continuing to educate ourselves, practicing the family values behind the tradition.

Lee's TaeKwonDo Academy stands out in our area because of its student's and Master's dedication and support in upholding the honor and tradition of the International Martial Arts Federation and the World Martial Arts Foundation. All our black belts have received their degrees from the IMAF and are bound by the rules and regulations held by the IMAF. Grand Master Lee and Master Lee both strive to achieve the highest standard of teaching for their students.

"The Best Self Defense is True Self Confidence"

What is TaeKwonDo?

It is and action philosophy, the Korean art of self defense. Literally translated it means "foot, hand, art." However, it is much more than Kicking and punching. It is designed as a nonviolent art system of practice, and a way of life. It includes physical and mental discipline with a deep philosophy. Through the practice of Tae Kwon Do, all practitioners can benefit as follows:

Physically: By developing good coordination and a strong body.

Mentally: By building self confidence, gaining good judgment, and developing a sound mind.

Philosophically: By learning to respect others, help others, be honest, and always stand be the weak. Thus, it is a guide for the formation of outstanding character, a modem world sport, and a philosophy.

Tenets of Tae Kwon Do

1. Courtesy (YeLu): consideration, politeness

2. Integrity (Yom Chi): honesty, sincerity, Being of moral principle

3. Perseverance (In Nae): Persistence, to continue patiently and insistently

4. Self-Control (Guk Gi): control of one's actions, emotions, and desires

5. Indomitable Spirit (Backjul Boolgool): not easily discouraged or defeated, unconquerable.

To All Students:

We learn TaeKwonDo in order to build our bodies and our minds. To grow stronger in love of our country, in love of justice, and in love of righteousness. We do not have to prove to others how strong we are. Our goal is to continue to become more powerful. When we become strong, we should live humbly, directing our power towards helping the weak. To become champions of justice, our spirit must be indomitable and this we should never forget.

The Korean flag, known as the '.'Tae Geuk" is a composite of Oriental Symbol ism. It consists of a white Background on which is found a circle, equally divided and in perfect balance. The red upper portion of the circle is known as "Urn", and the lower portion as "Yang". This ancient "Urn Yang" represents the unity, the totality of the universe, with it's ever present equal opposites. Opposites such as hot and cold, light and dark, active and calm. The black bars found at each corner of the flag continue this symbolism. Three solid bars in the upper left corner represent heaven, while Earth is represented by three broken bars in the lower right corner. Two solid outer bars with a broken bar between are located in the lower left and represent fire. It's the opposite, water, is symbolized in the upper right corner by two broken bars with a solid bar between. The balance of the equal opposite found in the symbolism of the flag is meaningful to the martial artist because it is reflective of the balance that he strives for as an ideal in his art and in his life.

Korean History

Silla Dynasty (661-935)

Prosperity and enlightenment then declined. Peasant revolts and extreme taxation led to its downfall.

Koryo Dynasty (918-1391)

Founder- Wang Kon, Known as King T'aejo.

Tang, China collapsed in 907 A.D. into the "Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms" thus weakening Silla, and enabling King T'aejo to consolidate his rule.

Mongol Invasion - In 1227, the Mongols swept across China, conquered Korea and dominated for over 100 years. The Mongols were overthrown in China and Korea in 1368. The Ming Dynasty was then founded in China, and the Yi Dynasty was founded in Korea in 1391.

YiDynasty

Founder- Yi Song Gye, who took the ceremonial name ofKing T'aejo. His son became King T'aejong. King T'aejong's son was known as King Sejong.

The capitol of Kaesong was Transferred to Hanyang (Modern Seoul) in 1395. King Sejong was the Yi Dynasty's greatest monarch. Under his rule Korea

experienced it's greatest period of cultural and creative development. An example of

this is the creation of the Korean alphabet under King Sejong.

The Yi Dynasty came to favor Confucianism over Buddhism and came to favor the arts and despise arms thus leaving Korea by the Hideyoshi (Japanese) in 1592 and 1597. It was because of men such as Yin Sun Sin that these invasions were unsuccessful.

The 17th and 18th centuries were marked by isolationism in Korea. This is significant because Korean culture, including martial arts, Developed independent of the outside word. This lent a uniqueness to Korean culture.

Korean History

1894 Japan fought China for possession of Korea

1903 Russia- Japanese War saw Korea as a contested territory

1910-1935 Japanese occupied Korea. This was the darkest period of Koran cultural development as the Japanese attempted to erase all traces of Koran culture and replace it with their own. Koran culture was preserved in secret, and emerged once again when Japan was defeated at the end of World War IT, and Korea was liberated.

1947 Korean independence recognized by the U.N.

1950 Korean split in North and South

Early 1950's General Choi combined all Korean martial arts under one name: TaeKwonDo

May, 1973 Dr. Kim founded The World TaeKwonDo Federation in

Kukkiwon, Seoul Korea.

1980 TaeKwonDo recognized as an official Olympic Sport by the International Olympic committee. This enables funds to be allocated to the TaeKwonDo training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs Colorado.

Today over 20 million people in over 110 countries throughout the world practice TaeKwonDo!!
